Nonviolent Communication Weekend Intensive With Aya Caspi

THE WEEKEND is designed to support the integration of the consciousness and practice of Nonviolent Communication and weave them deeply into the way we each show up in our lives, relationships, communities, and the world.

Participants will have the opportunity, through modeling and roleplaying, to apply this shift in consciousness to situations of interest, from the personal, interpersonal, and collective levels.

The sessions will combine large and small groups. We will use whatever arises in the field to experiment with and embody the consciousness.

We will learn with and from each other, while in communion surrounded by the beauty of Sonoma County.  In addition, the magnificent Russian River, along with the quaint towns of Sebastopol, Santa Rosa, Petaluma, and Healdsburg are each within a 15-35 minute drive away.

Speaking with Care: Language Tools for Educators and Caregivers

Hosted by: Women Hold the Key
In collaboration with: Not On Our Island

In this workshop, Aya Caspi introduces participants to the principles of Nonviolent Communication, emphasizing its application in interactions with children.

Aya will share how two animated kids’ shows she worked on at Warner Bros applied Nonviolent Communication with specific examples from the original scripts, her NVC notes to writers and how those notes were applied.

The course focuses on developing the ability to listen deeply and empathetically to children’s expressions, thus fostering a supportive environment. Participants will acquire techniques to rephrase judgments or criticisms into compassionate observations and requests, promoting mutual respect. Challenging behaviors and strategies to navigate them will be discussed along with demonstrations on how to connect with children in a way that invites goodwill and builds trust.

This session will include a slide presentation, video, and group interaction.

Aya brings extensive experience as an educational consultant for various media organizations, including Warner Bros. and Cartoon Network, where she has applied NVC principles to develop curricula and advise on content creation. Her background enriches the workshop with insights into effective communication strategies tailored for children.

Connecting Across Differences: Transforming Separation with Nonviolent Communication

Hosted by: Vashon Center of the Arts
In collaboration with: Not On Our Island

This event will consist of a lecture by Aya followed by short interview and Q&A

Come learn how to transform conflict by applying Nonviolent Communication to reclaim togetherness and restore trust amid separation and polarization.

Learn how to use empathy to reclaim other people’s innocence, even when they say or do things that are challenging or scary for us, and respond in a way that invites transformation rather than perpetuating fear and separation.

Some of the things we will explore:

  • What are the internal and external skills to support healing and reconciliation under conditions where there is a break in trust.
  • How to access everyone’s humanity and create a field of innocence beyond ‘right-wrong’ and ‘either/or’.
  • How to access people’s vulnerable truths in moments when they are most likely to hide behind their protections.
  • How to translate judgments, threats, demands and criticism into feelings, longings, “please and thank you” to help open hearts and make choices that are likely to care for everyone, self included.
  • How to hold everyone’s choice firmly, and compensate for power differences, so that everyone’s voices and needs are included and peaceful agreements are made based on true willingness with no coercion or giving up.
